Common Wealth Edison Company
Commonwealth Edison Company (ComEd) is a major electric utility serving approximately 4 million customers across northern Illinois, including the Chicago metropolitan area. Founded in 1882 as the Western Edison Light Company, it merged with Chicago Edison in 1892 and later with Commonwealth Electric Company in 1907 to form the Commonwealth Edison Company. In 1994, it reorganized as Unicom Corporation, which merged with PECO Energy in 2000 to create Exelon Corporation. ComEd operates over 66,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines and manages more than 11,400 square miles of service area. The company is committed to modernizing the electric grid and advancing clean energy initiatives. ComEd is headquartered in Chicago and employs approximately 6,600 individuals.
