Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL), also known as Berkeley Lab, is a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory located in Berkeley, California, and managed by the University of California. Founded in 1931 by physicist Ernest O. Lawrence, it was the first national laboratory in the United States and has since become a world-renowned center for scientific research. LBNL conducts multidisciplinary research in areas such as energy sciences, climate and environmental science, biosciences, materials science, physics, and high-performance computing. The laboratory operates major user facilities, including the Advanced Light Source and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC), which support researchers from around the world. Over the years, LBNL has contributed to numerous scientific breakthroughs, including the discovery of several chemical elements and advances in renewable energy and genomics. Its mission is to develop scientific solutions that address global challenges in energy, environment, and fundamental science.
