Union Electric Company, founded in 1902 in St. Louis, Missouri, was a major electric utility provider in the region. It merged with Central Illinois Public Service in 1997 to form Ameren Corporation. The company helped electrify urban and rural areas and built key hydroelectric projects like the Bagnell Dam. It was an early innovator, even selling electric cars in 1909.
